in conjunction with a position as

Head of Research Area "Research System and Science Dynamics" at the German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies (DZHW), Berlin

from as soon as possible.

The DZHW is jointly funded by the German federal and state governments. lt was founded in September 2013 and currently employs about 250 staff. Its head office is in Hanover, with a branch in Berlin, for which the head position is announced.

The research area "Research System and Science Dynamics" is currently focusing on the analysis of structures and interdependencies in the research system, particularly the interplay of different forms of governance, financing, and communication in the societal context. Developing bibliometric indicators and analysing how they affect organisational decisions and individual behaviour is a central topic of the research area.

The appointee will develop this research focus further, using an interdisciplinary approach where appropriate and taking the recommendations of the German Council of Science and Humanities (WR) into account, particularly with regard to the closer interweaving of higher education research and science studies, with a view to developing the DZHW into an international competence centre. This entails setting innovative focal points in science studies, taking into account the variety of topics, theories, methods and practical applications of the research area and the department, while at the same time intensifying ties between Berlin and Hanover. The willingness to actively shape the connection between higher education research and science studies with personal ideas and commitment is expected.

Duties of the Area Head at DZHW include the supervision of scientific work and strategic planning for the research area "Research Systems and Science Dynamics", which currently has around 40 staff. In addition to expertise in their discipline, the appointee will have experience in the procurement and management of research projects as well as in ensuring a supportive and appreciative work environment.

At the Berlin School of Library and Information Science at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, the appointee will represent the field of Science Studies both in research and teaching, with a teaching load of two hours per week during the semester. Collaboration on related study programs and cooperation with topical university initiatives and networks is expected (e.g. Open Humboldt, Berlin University Alliance, the interdisciplinary Robert K. Merton Centre).

The appointee

  • has an international reputation in science studies or information science,
  • has comprehensive expertise with a thorough theoretical and methodological foundation,
  • is competent in the multiperspectival spectrum of topics, theories, methods, practical applications of science studies and shows openness in dealing with the potential and the restrictions of different approaches, and
  • has broad methodological competencies and is particularly open for bibliometrical methods.

Publications in renowned international journals and pertinent research should demonstrate these abilities and skills in the applicant. Experience in the management and acquisition of national and international third-party funded projects, particularly interdisciplinary projects and projects closely related to practice, are also required. Experience in policy support and practical consultation, participative research with actors in and outside of research as well as proven involvement in relevant national and international networks are desirable.

We are looking for a team player, a dynamic and integrative personality with excellent leadership qualities, collaboration and communication skills.

The applicants must meet the legal requirements for professorial appointments in accordance with § 100 of the `Berliner Hochschulgesetz`.

HU is seeking to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching, and specifically encourages qualified female scholars to apply. Researchers from abroad are welcome to apply. Severely disabled applicants with equivalent qualifications will be given preferential consideration. People with an immigration history are specifically encouraged to apply.
