The Robert K. Merton Center for Science Studies (RMZ) serves as an interdisciplinary platform for research and teaching in Science Studies in its broadest sense. Specifically, this includes Science and Technology Studies, sociology of Science, Library and lnformation Science, Higher Education Research, History of Science, Meta-Research and others. The international research project "Disapeer: The reconfiguration of peers in editorial review" investigates the impact of current changes in publishing (increasing lnterdisciplinarity, open peer review practices, digital transformation) on the role of reviewers in the review process. A doctoral position is being advertised in this project to address the question of how these developments affect the practices of identifying and selecting reviewers in editorial work.

 

job description:

  • scientific services in research in the third-party funded project „Disapeer“
  • conducting qualitative interviews and ethnographic observations on the selection of peer reviewers at academic journals
  • conducting interviews and digital ethnography with developers of automated tools for peer reviewer selection
  • analysing qualitative data and combining it with other data collected in the project
  • active exchange and networking with the international project partners
  • presentation and publication of project results in German and English
  • tasks for own scientific qualification (doctorate)

 

requirements:

  • completed M.A. degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject (e. g. Science and Technology Studies, Social Sciences, European Ethnology, Cultural Studies, etc.)
  • experience with qualitative methods, especially ethnographic methods
  • interest in one or more of the following areas: the academic publishing system, interdisciplinarity, open science, digitalisation and automation
  • ability to work in an international, interdisciplinary team and willingness to travel internationally
  • very good organisational and communication skills and ability to work independently
  • good knowledge of German and English
